KITCHEN HOOD FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM INSPECTIONS: WHAT TO EXPECT

In commercial kitchens, compliance with fire codes is more than a requirement—it’s essential to protecting your people, property, and business. One of the most critical life safety requirements is maintaining your kitchen hood fire suppression system through regular inspections.

At Pye-Barker Fire & Safety, we perform hundreds of semiannual inspections for restaurants, cafeterias, and food service operations every month. Here’s what you can expect during your next inspection and how to prepare.

Kitchen fires are the leading cause of structure fires in restaurants. Fryers, grills, and open flames combined with grease-laden vapors can lead to a flash fire in seconds. A properly maintained suppression system can stop a fire before it spreads, minimizing damage and reducing downtime.

Inspections ensure your system functions properly and complies with the latest codes, including:

  • NFPA 17A: Standard for Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems
  • NFPA 96: Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations
  • UL 300: Performance standard for commercial kitchen suppression systems

These codes mandate that your suppression system be professionally inspected every 6 months at minimum.

To ensure an efficient inspection, be prepared to:

  • Shut off cooking appliances briefly as needed
  • Ensure clear access to the hood, ductwork, and control cabinet
  • Notify kitchen staff that a fire alarm or gas shutoff may be simulated

Have your system documentation available (previous inspection tags, design drawings, manuals)

A certified technician will inspect, test, and service every critical component of your suppression system:

Visual Inspection

  • Check nozzles for alignment and obstructions
  • Inspect piping, brackets, and cabinet condition
  • Ensure coverage matches current cooking equipment layout

Actuation System Testing

  • Inspect and replace fusible links as needed
  • Test manual pull stations for proper function
  • Confirm system control panel signals and shutdowns operate as intended

Cylinder and Agent Evaluation

  • Verify pressure levels on chemical cylinders
  • Check dates for recharge, hydrostatic testing, or replacement
  • Inspect hose connections and seals

Interlock and Appliance Shutdown Tests

  • Confirm automatic shutdown of gas or electrical supply to appliances
  • Test connection to building fire alarm panel if applicable

Documentation and Tagging

  • Provide updated inspection tags per AHJ standards
  • Note any deficiencies and recommendations
  • Complete inspection report for client records and code enforcement review

Your system will be rearmed and returned to operational status. If any repairs or replacements are needed, our technician will provide an estimate and can often complete service the same day.

If your system does not meet current standards (such as UL 300 compliance), we will advise on the necessary upgrade to pass inspection and protect your kitchen properly.

Violations often result from:

  • Obstructed or misaligned nozzles
  • Missing or outdated fusible links
  • Expired or low-pressure agent cylinders
  • Lack of interlock with gas/electric shutoffs
  • Non-UL 300-compliant system (typically older dry chemical models)

We help restaurant owners and facility managers stay in compliance with local fire marshals, insurance providers, and health departments. Our kitchen suppression services include:

  • UL 300 system design and installation
  • Semiannual inspections and recharging
  • Corrective repairs and upgrades
  • Emergency service if your system discharges or fails inspection

Staff training on manual activation and basic response protocols

Don’t wait until an inspector finds a problem—or worse, until a fire puts your kitchen out of commission. Let Pye-Barker handle your system inspection and keep your operation compliant, safe, and ready for anything.
